JUST A KID FROM ANTIOCH, TENNESSEE

Kevin Armstrong, Ed. D was born and raised in the Nashville, Tennessee area. He was reared academically in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School system. As the son of a kindergarten teacher, Kevin learned very early that education was paramount in his life. He graduated from John Overton High School, in 1990, where he excelled in track and field. He played a major role in John Overton High School winning the 1990 TSSAA Class AAA state title in track and field. Using both academics and athletics, Kevin signed an athletic scholarship with Middle Tennessee State University in track and field.

At MTSU, Kevin excelled in academics and athletics receiving the Student-Athlete Honor Roll award his final three years on campus, while also participating on three OVC championship track team titles at MTSU. After graduating in 1995, with a degree in Education, he went on to begin a career as a middle school educator in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School (MNPS) system. During this time, he went back to school and received his Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision in 2000, as well as his Doctoral degree in Leadership and Professional Practice in 2013- both from Trevecca Nazarene University.

After being named building level Teacher of the Year in 2004 and spending ten years as a classroom teacher, he was appointed an assistant principalship in 2005. During his six years as assistant principal, Kevin was accepted into the Principals’ Leadership Academy of Nashville (PLAN) where he received the Exemplary Project Award for his end of program project. He was also selected in 2007 by MNPS & Vanderbilt University to join twelve other administrators to travel to Guangzhou, China to study their educational system. He was the first assistant principal in MNPS to receive this honor. From 2013-2016, he served as a mentor principal with PLAN and during that time period traveled back to Guangzhou in 2014. He also served for two years (2017-2018) as a principal mentor in the prestigious Governors’ Academy of School Leaders program.

During the 2016-17 School year he was named MNPS Middle School Principal of the Year. In April 2017, he was selected as the 2017 National Distinguished Principal for the state of Tennessee by the Tennessee Principals’ Association. Kevin is now in his twenty-sixth year of education and his eleventh year as Executive Principal of DuPont Hadley Middle School.

While Kevin is continuing to build his business acumen, he also prides himself on putting his family first. Kevin is married to Crystal Armstrong. Together, they are the proud parents of three amazing children.
